This statement replies the claiming of “classicism” that people invoke when unable to synchronize with contemporaneity.
Every masterpiece of the past was perceived as a challenge to the current taste, as an outrage to the traditional values, in its specific historical context.
The clamor caused by Beethoven’s 9th symphony in Vienna, in 1824, can be compared to the one by Sex Pistols’ Anarchy in the UK in the London of 1976, but the temporal succession induces us to consider Beethoven as a classic, but not yet the Sex Pistols.
