Through a history marked by a succession of different roles from time to time assumed or granted, the Island is today the “old town”, severely depleted from the point of view of the population and functions, basically reduced to a “bridge” between the modern Taranto on the southeast, the railway station and Ilva’s steel mill on the northwest. The interpretation of what it was and what it could be suggested to encompass this valuable and unique urban formation as an integral part of Taranto, including a specific role in the ordinary dynamics of the city and its gravitational area.
